Bombardier focuses on business jets after shedding train branch


According to Bombardier CEO Alain Bellemare, this step is starting an exciting new chapter in the company’s history. “From now on, we are concentrating all our capital, energy and resources on accelerating growth and increasing margins in our leading $ 7 billion business jet franchise.”

Bombardier has been one of the leading manufacturers of business jets for many years. The flagship is the brand new Global 7500, intended for long distances. Last year the smaller Global 5500 and Global 6500 were also put into service. In addition, Bombardier builds smaller business jets such as the Challenger 350 and 650 and the Learjet 75 Liberty. This year the company expects to deliver 160 aircraft.

It was already announced last week that Bombardier is fully withdrawing from the A220 program, which includes commercial aircraft with 100 to 150 seats. In 2018, Airbus already took a majority stake in the then unsuccessful CSeries program, which was subsequently renamed A220. Now Airbus has taken over the remaining Bombardier shares.

Q400 and CRJ series
Previously, Bombardier sold production rights for the Q400 turboprop to De Havilland Aircraft of Canada, while the CRJ program was transferred to the Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation for $ 550 million.

Bombardier announced that it wanted to sell its division that is building trains to French competitor Alstom. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed on this, with Bombardier and Caisse de Qu├ębec’s depository and placement transferring their stake in Bombardier Transportation to Alstom for 7.5 billion euros.
