“In the last hours, an 18-year-old Bolivian citizen living in China arrived in Bolivia and has presented symptoms in the last hours that meet the definition of a suspected case for infection of the new coronavirus 2019,” said the interim Minister of Health, Víctor Hugo Cárdenas, quoted by the local newspaper La Razón.
He stressed that this case is considered clinically suspicious of coronavirus, due to the previous permanence of the patient in the Asian country, unlike three Japanese tourists who had been admitted preventively on February 4 and then discharged without suspicion of coronavirus.
Cárdenas made the announcement on the night of February 5, accompanied by the representative in Bolivia of the World Health Organization, Alfonso Tenorio, who confirmed that the case “meets the parameters defined for the cataloging of the suspect,” the newspaper added .
The Ministry of Health issued a statement stating that the suspect was treated according to international protocols and that laboratory tests to confirm or rule out coronaviruses were performed at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, United States.
The public and private health systems of Bolivia are declared on alert.
In addition, the Government of Bolivia is conducting controls at international airports and the main land border crossings.
The new coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, initially detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, at the end of 2019, it has caused until February 5, 563 deaths in China and more than 28,000 infections.
