Britain requested an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council on Friday. This was announced by a diplomatic source to the RIA Novosti news agency.

“Because of the recent events in Idlib, we requested an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council,” it said.

Escalation in Idlib

The situation in the Syrian province of Idlib had worsened after militants from the terrorist militia “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” * launched a large-scale offensive against positions of the Syrian government forces. The Syrian army countered the fire. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Turkish soldiers who should not have been there, among other things, came under fire.
33 Turkish soldiers were killed and at least 30 others injured in the bombing. Moscow continues to call for peaceful settlement in Idlib and for the fulfillment of previous agreements.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar announced on February 20 that the worsening situation in Idlib would not affect deliveries of Russian S-400 air defense systems to Turkey.

NATO consultations on Idlib

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called a security advisory after the attack. The NATO Council should hold consultations on the current situation in Syria on Friday at the request of Turkey. As the US State Department told RIA Novosti, the United States is supporting Turkey as its NATO ally and is “examining ways to best assist Turkey in this crisis.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stressed that Turkey has several key commitments to solve the problems surrounding Syrian Idlib not meet can.
