Immediately stopping the provisional return without warning has led to frustration and even acute problems for countless people. "Smeerlappen", a victim says about the tax authorities.

Research by RTL Z today revealed that the tax authorities stopped the monthly provisional return of 124,000 people this year, without prior warning. That number is much higher than other years, due to a new strict rule applied by the tax authorities.

Stopped unjustly

The Tax Authorities stop those refunds to prevent people from receiving money that has to be paid back later. But it is clear that in thousands of cases the refund was unjustly stopped and people often had no chance to rectify the mistake of the tax authorities in time.

Because many people only heard that they did not receive their money when they actually expected it on the bill, some also risk getting into acute trouble.

Hardly needed for a sick daughter

A victim says that her return was suddenly stopped, but that she desperately needs the money to buy (expensive) groceries for the diet of her seriously ill daughter.

“I don’t get all of that reimbursed, so that the tax suddenly stops paying is really not good. I’ll see if it can be reversed, because every euro is 1. again.” And: “It’s just a disappointment.”

Another does not make any sense: “Smeerlappen”, Nicole calls the people from the Tax Authorities. After having had a normal return for 15 years, the return from scratch was stopped last year. “For no reason. Nothing at all,” she says. According to her, an employee told her that “people were randomly picked”.

After she had made a new application, she finally had to wait another eight months for her money, 150 euros a month. “That’s quite a lot for me and my little girl,” said the single mother.

Why?

And so there have been many responses. Almost everyone says they have not received any prior warning. All too often, the employees of the Tax Authorities did not know why the money was suddenly turned off.

For example, Bianca (44) from Zoetermeer: ”I received a letter with the date January 15th. It said that I will no longer receive a provisional refund. Why? No idea. It saves me 100 euros per month.”

A lot of money for Bianca. “I have an owner-occupied apartment. Due to a reorganization of the insurance company where I worked, I lost my job. I am short of every month. 100 euros is a lot of money that I miss. And I don’t know why.”

400 euros less

For Mark van der Drift it is very recognizable. “In January I suddenly received a letter stating that my provisional refund had been stopped altogether. Without giving up. I did not understand it. The tone of the letter also irritated me. No reason, nothing.”

And it’s not about nothing. Mark now misses out on 400 euros a month. “We are not having a bad time, but we still take this money into account in our budget. And trust in the Tax Authorities has been damaged a bit. And it takes a lot of work to put it all back.”

Must be better

The new Secretary of State for Finance, Hans Vijlbrief, has since promised recovery. “That should have been different. We will do better next year,” he said this morning.

“It has come too late, that message,” continued Vijlbrief about the way in which the Tax and Customs Administration has communicated with people about the radical change. “They have changed some of the criteria, which should have been reported earlier.” Anyone who is afraid that something has gone wrong with him or her can still request a provisional assessment, advises the tax authorities.
