After severe gas explosion in NRW: dead fireman recovered


After a gas explosion in a residential building in Lienen near Osnabrück (North Rhine-Westphalia) on Saturday, the deceased firefighter was brought out of the rubble of the partially collapsed building. This was announced by a police spokesman on Sunday morning.

According to previous knowledge, the explosion occurred when firefighters searched for the origin of the smell of gas. The 19-year-old was among the collapsed debrisn spilled and died.

The recovery the 19-year-old from the partially collapsed house was complicated and difficult, said the police spokesman. The emergency services should have cut thick concrete parts.

Now it is determined how the tragedy could have happened. During the course of Sunday, a structural engineer will examine the building and decide whether the police can enter the site and begin the investigation. The house was already secured with wire ropes and supports yesterday.

Previously, it was reported that another trapped fireman with serious injuries was recovered and hospitalized. Several other firefighters were also injured when they were deployed.

The residents of the house could previously be brought to safety.

The death of the young fireman caused dismay nationwide. The North Rhine-Westphalian Interior Minister, Herbert Reul, (CDU) expressed his condolences to the family via Twitter.

The German Fire Brigade Association called on all fire departments to hold a two-week mourning pile.
