“A very positive first day with this new machine”

Fabio Quartararó was again the fastest during the second test day at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The Frenchman was only on the road during the first day with 2019 material, on Saturday the “Rookie of the Year” was introduced to the 2020 Yamaha YZR-M1 for the first time.

It was a productive second day of the official MotoGP test at the Sepang International Circuit for Fabio Quartararo and his Petronas Yamaha SRT team. The Frenchman arrived early on the circuit and was eager to start because he knew he would be riding the 2020 Yamaha YZR-M1 for the first time. The first day was all about getting used to driving the MotoGP machine again; a lot of work had to be done during the second day.

Because Quartararó has already signed his contract with Yamaha, in which he became factory driver of the Japanese manufacturer in 2021 and 2022, he was allowed to make his miles on the brand new machine for the coming season after Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales.

The Frenchman rode no less than 72 laps (the MotoGP race on the Sepang International Circuit is always run over 20 laps) with a fastest lap of 1’58.572, 0.069 second faster than Jack Miller and only 0.269 slower than the fastest lap ever in Malaysian circuit.

Fabio Quartararo: “I am very positive because this is only the first day with the new machine. We know that the factory team has tested a lot last season, but I am very happy with the work of my team because we have made many adjustments today. We have done 72 laps and that is quite a lot, but I am very happy that I am already feeling so well on this machine. It is very difficult to make a new motorcycle very well in one day. Hopefully we can take another step tomorrow. We were able to do a lot of laps in the 1’59 with old tires so that is already very positive. We still have to improve the pace a little because I am not yet 100% comfortable. We know that with a new machine you have a number of positive points and some parts that you still have trouble with, but at the moment we have already found the positive points. ”

Sunday is the third and final day of the Sepang Test and all drivers, including Yamaha test driver Jorge Lorenzo, will be back in action. In two weeks a three-day test will take place at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar, after which the first Grand Prix of 2020 will be held two weeks later on the same circuit.
