6.2 magnitude earthquake off Papua New Guinea


A seaquake occurred off the coast of the Pacific state of Papua New Guinea on Sunday. The epicenter with a strength of 6.2 was located off the island of New Britain. It is still unclear whether people were injured.

According to the USGS earthquake center, the quake occurred at 6:04 a.m. UTC (7:04 a.m.CET).

The epicenter was 122 kilometers south of the city Kokopo at a depth of 31.3 kilometers.

No information is available on possible victims or damage to property.

Papua New Guinea lies on a section of the highly active seismic Pacific fire ring, which account for around 90 percent of all earthquakes worldwide.
