MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Turkey began a new phase of the Kapan military operation in the province of Sirnak, in the southeast of the country, against members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which it considers a terrorist organization, reported the Interior Ministry of Turkey.

“The objective of the Kapan-5 operation, involving 780 police and gendarmerie agents, is to eliminate PKK terrorists in Sirnak province,” the statement said.

Founded in the 1970s as a far-left party, the PKK fought with weapons in hand against the Ankara government for decades, demanding the creation of Kurdish autonomy in southeastern Turkey.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense reported that since 2015 the security forces neutralized more than 10,000 militants of the PKK.
