Smoking at Dutch stations is completely prohibited. ProRail will remove the smoking zones that have been set up for this in the coming period. At the same time, the Dutch Railways stop selling tobacco products in the shops at the stations.

ProRail and NS have taken that decision together to, in their own words, “contribute to a smoke-free generation in 2040”. According to the railway companies, support for smoking in society is decreasing and they regularly receive complaints from travelers who are bothered by it. If it is up to ProRail, the ban must take effect on 1 October.

NS stops earlier – from 1 April – with the sale of tobacco products in the stores that the transporter manages himself, that is the Kiosk and the Station House Room. In addition, they no longer conclude new contracts with other stores that want to sell tobacco at the station.
