The visibility was poor on Sunday morning. The Los Angeles police had therefore decided to keep all helicopters on the ground. The pilot received permission to continue flying during the flight, despite the sudden deterioration in visibility. He had more than 1200 flight hours of experience in the helicopter in which he flew.
