“Such a beautiful face … no one can associate them with economics.” Actor Amitabh Bachchan’s statement about Geeta Gopinath, the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund and of Indian descent, is currently under discussion.
During the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, a female contestant was asked a question about Geeta Gopinath. At that time, Amitabh Bachchan gave this reaction about Geeta Gopinath.
Amitabh showed a photo of Geeta Gopinath on the screen and said to the female contestant, “Such a beautiful face … no one can associate her with economics.”
This video clip has gone viral on social media.
Geeta Gopinath herself has expressed happiness over being asked questions related to him in KBC and hearing Amitabh’s statement. He tweeted the video, saying, “I don’t think I’ll ever forget this. It’s very special to me as a huge fan of the superhero ‘Big B.’
Geeta Gopinath praised Amitabh’s statement, but many on social media have pointed out that Big B’s statement is ‘sexist’.
Indian economist Rupa Subramaniam wrote, “It’s very racist and silly. I hoped you would protest it rather than rejoice. The way your reaction to the comments is going viral, you don’t seem to have a problem with sexism.”
Apart from Rupa Subramaniam, several women strongly objected to Amitabh Bachchan’s statement.
Namita wrote, “I don’t like the comment ‘Beauty with a brain’. Amitabh Bachchan’s hint that beautiful women cannot be economists is foolish.”
Another Twitter user said, “In fact, it was a ‘cheap’ comment. You (Gita) are a scholar and Amitabh could talk about you only because of your face. We should tell our next generation about your performance, not just about beauty.” Missed a great opportunity. “
Lalita wrote, “Amitabh Bachchan thinks that economists cannot be beautiful. He proved once again that there is no such thing as real life on screen.”
Another Twitter user wrote, “I watched these clips almost 10 times and read the female contestant’s facial expressions. She started for a moment or maybe she thought she wasn’t that pretty …”
There is another stream of opinion on social media which does not find Amitabh Bachchan’s statement offensive. Many think that he only praised Gita Gopinath.
Many are also saying that there is no need to argue so much about Amitabh’s statement. One Twitter user wrote, “Maybe Amitabh wanted to say that the economist’s personality looks serious but Gita is different.”
The controversy over ‘Beauty with a Brain’ is not new. There is an opinion among women about this. Saying ‘Beauty with Brain’ is not a compliment to women but encourages prejudice against women who are not intelligent.
These topics are constantly being discussed in the field of Gender Studies. Instead of women’s accomplishments and the success they have achieved, opinions about them are formed on their face and body.
