Due to the Corona epidemic, so far only special categories like women and those providing essential services were allowed to travel in local trains with special passes.
Railway Minister allows women to travel in local trains of Mumbai
The Mumbai local is like a ‘lifeline’ for the millions of travelers of the metropolitan Mumbai, especially for the financially weak. The first local service will start till 7 am for the people and will run at four in the evening. The last train is at 9 pm. The remaining time the train will be only for essential services such as frontline workers, health care workers and others. The metropolis of Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra, for example, has been highly affected by the Corona epidemic.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had announced in October last year that women would be able to travel in local trains in Mumbai and suburbs. Earlier, personnel working on the advance front in local trains and those connected with the essential services graded by Maharashtra government were able to travel. The Maharashtra government had requested the Railways on 16 October to allow women passengers to use the local train service during non-peak hours (11 am to 3 pm and 7 pm till the end of day service).
