MUMBAI: A sudden technical glitch at Mahatrans’ Kalwa-Padgha center in Mumbai, Thane and adjoining areas, including Navi Mumbai, caused a power outage at 10 am on Monday. For the first time in history, the lights went out all day in the Mumbai metropolis. Taking serious note of this incident, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray directed a comprehensive inquiry. He also instructed the departments to repair the channels which caused the incident.
Although MSEDCL, BEST, Tata and Adani claimed that power supply was restored till 5 pm in most parts of the eastern and western suburbs including South Mumbai and Central Mumbai, in reality most parts of Thane and Navi Mumbai including Bhandup, Mulund were in darkness till late at night.

Why the power outage?
1) There are four important 400 KV power lines supplying power to Mumbai. Among them, Kalwa-Talegaon (Powergrid) channel was closed on Sunday due to broken conductor. The breakdown was in a remote area at the top of the Sahyadri range, making it extremely difficult to work there.
2) 400 KV Padgha-Kalwa Vahini-1 was shut down at 4:33 am on Monday due to over voltage. The supply was running smoothly through the remaining two channels.
3) Padgha-Kalwa Vahini-2 was shut down at 10 am due to breakdown and Mumbai’s power supply went to Islanding. At the same time, Tata Power’s 500 MW and Adani’s 250 MW at Dahanu.
The power supply in Mumbai was disrupted due to the shutdown.

Holiday to online class
The power outages caused huge financial losses to Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. The railway administration claimed that the power supply to Mumbai local started smoothly between 12 noon and 12:30 pm on Monday. Until then, the local passengers were in great distress. The online classes of schools and colleges in particular were also hit by the power outage. Most schools and colleges do not have online classes on Mondays.

Banks, ATMs also closed
Passengers were evacuated with the help of police from a closed locomotive. Mumbai Municipal Corporation had also set up its own shelter for local passengers. The traffic was light at this time of night. Banks everywhere came to a standstill. There was a picture of many banks shutting down. So, even though there was money in many ATMs, customers had problems due to lack of battery backup. Work from home was also hit.
