Mumbai / Kolhapur: Bhanu Athaiya, who won the Best Costume Designer award for Richard Attenborough’s world-famous film ‘Gandhi’ in 1982, passed away at his home in Colaba, Mumbai. He won his first Oscar for India. Bhanu Athaiya is originally from Kolhapur and her name is Bhanupriya Rajapakse.

Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to be honored with an Oscar at the international level. As a costume designer for the film ‘Gandhi’, he won the Oscar for Best Costume Designer along with John Molo. The film has won a total of eight Oscars.
Notably, Bhanu Athaiya started his film career as a costume designer in 1956 with Guru Dutt directed film ‘CID’. He later designed costumes for Guru Dutt’s ‘Pyasa’, ‘Chaudhvi Ka Chand’ and ‘Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam’.
