In Taiwan, eight people were killed when an army helicopter crashed during an emergency landing. Among the dead is also Taiwanese army chief Shen Yi-ming. Five people survived the crash.
The helicopter, a Black Hawk, made an emergency landing for an unknown reason in a mountainous area near capital Taipei. The occupants returned from a New Year’s event in the northeast of the island.
The 62-year-old army chief was responsible for the Taiwanese defense against China. The government has announced three days of mourning.
