What was suggested yesterday in the Danish media is today official: Bjarne Riis buys in WorldTour team NTT Pro Cycling and also becomes team manager of the new team of Victor Campenaerts.
Bjarne Riis is a much-discussed figure in the peloton. He won the Tour of 1996, but confessed in 2007 that he did so on doping. He was a persona non grata in the cycling environment for a long time, but in 2016 he started with the cycling company Virtu Cycling again at the bottom of the ladder.
He is now realizing the ambition to be active again at the highest level. Together with fellow shareholders Lars Seier Christensen and Jan Bech Andersen, Virty Cycling takes a minority stake in South African NTT Pro Cycling, the new name of Team Dimension Data.
The two partners share the vision of the continuous development of the team and the emphasis on the importance of cycling to change people’s lives. The two are committed to sustainability and future success.
Riis: “Want to make NTT a team that everyone wants to be part of”
55-year-old Riis is looking forward to his new adventure: “This is a proud moment for Virtu Cycling. I am extremely excited about the potential of this partnership. I am convinced that together we can create one of the best cycling teams in the world. We must succeed with our years of experience in the WorldTour and a performance and technology-oriented approach. ”
“I look forward to taking on the sporting leadership of the team. I have nothing but admiration for what Doug Ryder (founder and team boss NTT Pro Cycling, ed.) Has achieved with this team. Together we can take the team a step higher I want to make NTT a team that everyone – riders and staff – wants to be part of. ”
