Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono announced today, Wednesday, that his country will make “diplomatic efforts” to reduce the tension between the United States of America and Iran, stressing that his country will not participate in any American or European military operation in the region.

Moscow – Sputnik. “We will continue to make diplomatic efforts to reduce tension and stabilize the situation in the region,” the minister said during a joint press conference with his US counterpart Mark Esper in the Pentagon.

Kono indicated that the Japanese army adheres to the “constitution”, which prohibits participation in international military operations abroad.

Kono stated: “The Japanese government earlier allowed the dispatch of military personnel to the region to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, through which crude oil tankers pass. The reason is that Japan imports about 19 percent of the crude oil, and 80 percent of ( Cargo ships) pass through the Strait of Hormuz. ”

This last week, the Japanese Minister of Defense issued an order to send naval forces and unmanned aerial vehicles to gather intelligence and defend Japanese and foreign oil tankers in the event of any threats to them in the Strait of Hormuz or in the Gulf.

The forces will start their duties on January 20, and the destroyer “Takanami” is scheduled to arrive in the Middle East on February 2.
