Flight 89 of Delta Airlines was en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai when it had engine problems. The aircraft then dumped fuel as part of the emergency procedure and returned safely to Los Angeles airport.
But the fuel ended up near the playground of two schools. Several children complained about toxic fumes and skin irritation. No fewer than seventy firefighters and emergency workers came to the scene. All in all, at least seventeen children and six adults received care. No one was taken to the hospital and no evacuation was made.
The fire department subsequently confirmed that the discharged material was kerosene.
