Chilean citizens organized to think together about climate change and generate proposals: they are holding two summits parallel to COP25 in Santiago, not in Madrid. From their territory they denounce the environmental situation and warn that the social crisis they are going through is also ecological. Sputnik explains why.

The United Nations World Summit on Climate Change was to be held in Chile between December 2 and 13, but due to protests in Santiago, the president of the country, Sebastian Pinera, he suspended it (like the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum). Now it is being developed in Madrid, Spain.
However, Pinera could not suspend the social summits organized by the citizens who (with or without COP) wanted to express and propose approaches to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect the environment they inhabit. In the midst of protests against the country's institutionality and simultaneously to the COP25, in Chile the Peoples Summit and the Social Summit for Climate Action.
Angel Lisboa, a member of the Caravan for Peace and Restoration of Mother Earth organization and spokesperson for the Peoples Summit, assured Sputnik that the social crisis that Chile is going through (and several countries of the world) is also environmental.

"When we begin to see all the situations that afflict us in the daily life, we realize that social and ecological aspects are present," said Lisbon, and listed: "we see it in water rights, in the areas of sacrifice, when we see the polluted city or when we see that agriculture systems are not working. "

"If we want to build a new time, a new story, the first thing we have to do is recognize ourselves as sons and daughters of the earth; once we begin to feel part of the territory, we will protect it," said Lisbon.

Lisbon explained that for this reason it is that the People's Summit is proposing to include the original peoples in the new Constitution, and thus create a plurinational State, which also legally protects nature.

"The native peoples have left their communities to teach us to look at nature in another way, to get out of nature what we really need, to live in a more austere way, to get that consumerism, that neoliberal system," he added. "The social outbreak confirms what we were seeing as a Summit: the need to start building new things," he summarized.
