WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The US Senate plans to soon adopt a European energy security bill aimed at fighting Russian influence, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said on Wednesday.

Washington – Sputnik. Murphy said at a conference organized by the Atlantic Council in Washington: "I do not know what the outcome will be reached in the North Stream-2, but I doubt our potential to stop taking into account his great progress."
In this regard, Murphy said the United States should find other solutions to the problem of the "Northern-2" current.

He hoped that in the coming weeks a bill would be adopted in the Foreign Affairs Committee to create a new financial mechanism, which would promote energy independence in Eastern Europe.

The Northern Stream II project involves the construction of two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, from the Russian coast across the Baltic Sea to Germany. The construction of the project is planned for completion in 2019. The gas pipeline runs through the territorial waters or exclusive economic zones of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

Nord Stream-IIG, of which Gazprom owns 100 percent of its shares, is the operator of the project, and the European partners in the project – Shell, OMV, Inge, Uniper and Wintershall have pledged "Covering 50 percent of the cost of the project by investing each company in the amount of 950 million euros (total 4.75 billion euros), while the second half of the total investment required 4.75 billion euros will be provided by" Gazprom ".
