The independence referendum in Bougainville took place from 23rd November to 7th December 2019 because of its geographical features. The date of the referendum has been postponed several times. Initially, the referendum was scheduled for June 15, 2019, later on October 17, 2019.

Bougainville is currently part of Papua New Guinea as an autonomous province. The island is named after the French adventurer Louis Antoine de Bougainville. From the 1880s to the First World War was the province Part of German New Guinea, Then she was occupied by Australia, until she finally became part of Papua New Guinea in 1975.
