RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) – Marriages between people of the same sex in Brazil increased by 61.7% between 2017 and 2018, according to Civil Registry data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (iBGE).

"Despite the 1.6% reduction in total civil weddings between 2017 and 2018 (from 1,070,376 to 1,053,467) the number of same-sex weddings increased 61.7% in the same period , going from 5,887 to 9,520, "the state agency said in a statement.

Throughout 2018, the number of gay marriages multiplied throughout the country, and the trend gained strength from October, following the victory of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro.
In October 2018, the month of the elections, there were 674 same-sex weddings, but in December, one month before Bolsonaro began to govern, the number of gay marriages was 3,098, an increase of 360%.
At that time, many couples decided to marry for fear that the government of the ultra-rightist leader, known for his numerous homophobic statements, would cut rights acquired by the LGTBI community in recent years.

The IBGE, in any case, does not make a cause-effect correlation and simply presents the data, without pointing out possible causes of growth.

The same-sex civil union has been legal in Brazil since 2011, when the Federal Supreme Court changed the understanding of the Civil Code that the family consists of a man and a woman.

Since then, the tendency of increase of this type of unions presents a stable growth; From 2014 to 2017, for example, there was an advance of 21%, but it never grew as prominently as last year.
