Algeria's military congratulates new President Tebboune

The day after the December 12 election results were announced, General Gaïd Salah congratulated the President-elect and thanked "loyal citizens" for participating in the vote.

The Algerian army’s chief of staff, General Ahmed Gaïd Salah, congratulated Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Saturday after his election in the first round of a presidential election marked by strong abstention, reports the AFP.
General Gaïd Salah has been the strong man of Algeria since the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April, under pressure from a protest movement which then demanded the dismantling of the "system" and contested the ballot organized to appoint him a successor, perceived as a maneuver for the survival of power.

"I would like to express to all the loyal citizens of the Algerian people (…) the highest marks of consideration, gratitude and recognition for their massive participation in this important electoral deadline and their successful choice, in all transparency, integrity and conscience, of Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune ", declared the general Gaïd Salah, quoted by the agency.

The army "will support" the President-elect, he added in this congratulatory message published on the website of the Ministry of National Defense, saying that Mr.Tebboune was "experienced" and "able" to lead the Algeria "towards a better future".

74-year-old M.Tebboune was elected with 58.15% of the vote, according to the Independent National Election Authority (ANIE), in a poll that recorded the lowest voter turnout in the history of pluralist presidential elections in Algeria (39.83%).
