Terrorist group "Revolutionary self-defense": Major anti-terrorist operation carried out in Athens


In a major anti-terrorist operation in Athens' capital, Athens, three people have been arrested and fifteen taken into custody. According to the police, they were linked to the "Revolutionary Self-Defense" terrorist group and participated in several acts of violence in the country, including the attack on the Mexican Embassy.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated the officials, as demanded by the press office. Mitsotakis reiterated his commitment to "finally solve the problem of domestic terrorism in Greece".

The mission has been running since Friday noon in the Attica region. So far, 13 house searches have been carried out in the measures. The investigators also reported three arrestsTwo men aged 41 and 45 and a 39-year-old woman. The latter is accused of violating the weapons law. According to the police, the alleged men are crimes with a terrorist motive, unauthorized possession of explosives, violation of the weapons law and document fraud. In addition, a warrant for suspected terrorism was issued against a 46-year-old Greek.
During the searches weapons were discovered, including five Kalashnikov assault rifles, which is said to have used the "Revolutionary Self-Defense" in four previous attacks. These include the attack on the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) headquarters in Athens on 25 May 2014, two attacks on police officers near the party offices in January and November 2017 and the bombing of the Mexican Embassy in Athens in July 2016.
