HAVANA (Sputnik) – The Mexican Foreign Secretary, Marcelo Luis Ebrard, on an official visit to Cuba, opted for an expansion of bilateral relations, during the meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, at the headquarters of the Chancellery of the island.

"Cuba has always been an extremely close country for Mexico, not only in geography, but in culture, we value history, the foundations of what Cuba has done, and today this delegation is coming so that we can start a new stage , better, more expands in the relationship between the two countries, "said the Mexican foreign minister.

Mexico and Cuba maintain uninterrupted diplomatic relations since 1903, and It was the only country in America that did not break its ties with Havana in the early years of the 1960s, after the triumph of the 1959 Revolution.
At the moment, Mexico is the second commercial partner of the island in the region, and sixth worldwide, and is the first issuer of tourism to Cuba in the area, and the eighth worldwide.
During his meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Ebrard insisted that his country defends the non-intervention, the self-determination of the peoples, the peaceful solution to the controversies, and – he specified – "in the UN General Assembly, we made it known to all countries of the world".

For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Rodriguez Parrilla said he was satisfied with the excellent state of bilateral relations, and the deep links that exist between Cuba and Mexico, mainly due to its historical character, its solid foundations, and the perspectives that are anchored in that environment of trust.
