As the news portal "SPIEGEL" reports with reference to an internal government paper, the decision was taken by the Defense Committee with the support of the Union and the SPD. The battle tanks, which cost around one billion euros, are expected by 2025. The contract is to be paid out of unissued budgets for other weapons. The contract will take over the arms company Krauss Maffei Wegmann.
The reason for this extensive arming was the concern of the army for the tank inventory.
At the same time, 95 decommissioned "Leopard" models are to be modernized. According to Spiegel statements, the number of tanks will then increase to 320 "Leopard" tanks.
In this context, it is feared that because of the simultaneous modernization temporarily only one hundred systems could be operational. That would mean that Germany could not fulfill its obligation to NATO.
The Federal Government will now decide on the decision of the committee.
