PARIS (Reuters) – French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner on Sunday blamed "thugs" and "brothers" for the violence that marred demonstrations on the first anniversary of the start of the "yellow vest" protests.

Asked about the violence in Paris yesterday, Castaner told Europe 1 radio: "What we saw yesterday were a few (legitimate) demonstrators, the rest were thugs, brothers and idiots."

Protesters burned cars and threw stones and bottles at police, and police fired tear gas and water cannons during marches to mark the anniversary of the anti-government Yellow Jacket movement.

Police arrested 264 people nationwide yesterday, 173 of them in Paris, Castaner said.
