Former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is set to be freed by a court in Brazil

Former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, convicted of corruption, has been released by a court in Brazil.

Mexico – Sputnik. The court said in a statement: "Due to the lack of reasons for the continued implementation of criminal sanctions, ended the prison convicts."

Following the decision, Lula da Silva left prison on Friday and addressed a gathering of his supporters in the city of São Paulo, calling on them to demonstrate.

The former president is scheduled to tour the country, delivering speeches to supporters across Brazil.

Lula da Silva, who served as Brazil's president from 2003 to 2010 and remains one of the country's most popular politicians, was convicted of money laundering and corruption in July 2017 and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Lula da Silva became the first president in Brazil's history to be convicted of corruption and imprisoned.

In April his prison term was reduced to 8 years and 10 months.

Lula da Silva denies any wrongdoing, and his defense team has filed several appeals against the court ruling.
