For Damascus, the Turkish President is a "man disconnected from reality"

Syrian diplomacy did not appreciate Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statement that one of the objectives of Operation Source of Peace was to free "the people of the region from the clutches of terrorists". But for Damascus, the role of protector of the Syrian people belongs exclusively to the country's army.

The Turkish President's recent statements testify to the fact that he is "a man out of touch with reality," Syrian official news agency Sana told reporters at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Erdogan speaks of his fear for the Syrian people and its protection while attacking civilians in northern Syria under the pretext of fighting terrorism."

According to Sana's source, "Erdogan's regime" hides behind "humanitarian slogans while he is away from them and responsible for massacres".

Syrian diplomacy also reports that Syria "will face Turkish aggression in all its forms across the country, using all legal means". It further stresses that "the task of protecting the Syrian people belongs to the Syrian Arab Army, the Syrian State and no one else".

The Turkish offensive

Turkey on Wednesday (October 9th) launched an air and land offensive against Kurdish militias in northeastern Syria, called the Source of Peace. According to the Turkish President, the operation should allow to "create a safe area that will allow the return of Syrian refugees" that Turkey has hosted on its territory.

According to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the objective of the operation is to preserve "the territorial integrity of Syria" and free "the people of the region from the clutches of terrorists".
