Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi has stated his willingness to resign from office, according to al-Sumaria.

"Abdul Mahdi has accepted the resignation," it said, citing President Barham Saleh on Thursday early new elections announced in Iraq.

He will launch this as soon as a new electoral law is passed and a new electoral commission stands, Saleh said in a televised speech.

Protests in Iraq

Protesters in Iraq have been calling for a government overthrow and fundamental reforms in the country for weeks. Already at the beginning of the month almost 150 civilians had been killed in day long protests in Baghdad and other regions. A government report later claimed that most of them were killed by gunshot wounds in the head or chest.
Nationwide, about 50 government buildings and offices have been attacked and set afire by parties, according to the Human Rights Commission.
