bus against tree, investigation into the causes of the accident

No it was neither drunk nor drugged the Atac driver who drove the line 301 bus crashed into a tree on the via Cassia, to Northern Rome around 9:00 am on Wednesday 16 October. In fact, the alcohol and toxicological tests performed on the 40-year-old driver of the Roman public transport company which is still under observation atSanto Spirito hospital in Rome where he was transported by the ambulance of 118 after being injured after the road accident.

It remains now to understand what has determined the exit of the public transport that, after having climbed with the front wheel right on the pavement at number 481 of the Via Cassia, to Nero's Tomb, crashed violently against a tree. A driving accident, a distraction due to an alleged use of the mobile phone, without excluding a mechanical failure on the bus or a problem with the braking system of the same.

Several hypotheses are being examined by agents of the XV Cassia Group of the Local Police of Roma Capitale, coordinated by the executive Ugo Esposito, who after hearing several witnesses are finishing listening to other passengers who were on board the 301.

While waiting to hear the driver of the bus, who is still in observation at the hospital, two investigations are open: one internal to Atac and one to Rome prosecutor's office, which opened an investigation file against unknown persons for injuries. The deputy prosecutor, Nunzia D'Elia and the pm Gennaro Varonand, have also arranged an expert report to verify the status of the public transport, meanwhile seized. The driver is currently not under investigation.

In order to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident, it will still be necessary to wait for the results of the technical appraisals on the vehicle and on mobile phones and also to have a complete clinical picture of the driver in order to rule out any possible illness.

Important elements will arrive once the investigations are completed on the two mobile phones seized from the 40-year-old driver, the private one and the service one. In fact, the telephone records and the messaging of the two mobile phones will give an important first answer for the continuous investigation of the Local Police.

The testimonies reported to the investigators by the passengers who were on the bus at the time of the road accident are in fact conflicting. Some of them have reported that they saw the driver use the phone while others reported seeing him faint just before the crash against the tree. It remains now to evaluate the reliability of their testimonies, also considering the fact that 301 at the time of impact (at 9:00 am) was full of passengers with those who were in the back who could hardly have seen the same happening in the cockpit.

Injuries, however, not serious injuries, this is the hypothesis of a crime on which the prosecution opened the investigation file, as among the wounded transported to the hospital (31 those accompanied by the ambulances of 118 in the various Roman hospitals), no one exceeds the 20 days of prognosis. Number of injured who, as often happens during accidents involving public transport, increased during the hours of Wednesday, reaching the number of about 60 (many of whom spontaneously appeared in the various emergency departments during the day yesterday) .

In addition to various bruises and bruises, several passengers were injured by the windows of the bus windows that burst at the moment of the impact between the bus and the tree with the splinters that mainly hit the passengers who were in the front of the 301.

In detail, four passengers (three in yellow code and one in red) were transported to Agostino Gemelli University Hospital; three allVilla San Pietro hospital (two in red code one in yellow); four to Umberto I General Hospital (two in red code, the same number in yellow code and one in green code); seven toFatebenefratell hospitali (four yellow and three in green code); two allSanto Spirito hospital (a yellow code and a red code); two allSan Filippo Neri hospital (a yellow and a red); four wounded allSant'Andrea hospital (two in red code, one in yellow and one in green); last two injured of the 29 were finally transported to thethe San Giovanni Addolorata hospital (a yellow code and a green code); with two others (for a total of 31) then transported to the all'Aurelia Hospital (one in yellow code and one in green).

Nine passengers were transported to different hospitals in red code but they were not life threatening. According to what has been learned from 118 the red codes concerned people who were in the front of the vehicle, who in the hospital were subsequently subjected to instrumental examinations. None of them suffered impairment of vital signs.

Thus a double line of investigation, that of the Judiciary and one internal to the Roman Public Transport Company: "Atac – communicates the company in a note – immediately launched an internal investigation to ascertain the reasons for the serious accident that involved a bus on line 301 along the Via Cassia this morning, causing injuries to some people. The company is verifying the events that have occurred, also for the purpose of identifying any liability profiles, and apologizes to the passengers involved".

Meanwhile, from what has been learned, the tree against which the bus crashed was knocked down, as it remained unsafe after being violently hit from 301.

To defend the driver Claudio De Franscesco, general secretary of the Faisa Sicel. Speaking to the transmission microphones "Italy has awakened", conducted by the director Gianluca Fabi, Matteo Torrioli is Daniel Moretti on Radio Cusano Campus, issuer of the Niccolò Cusano University: "Regarding the Cassia incident, a witness said she saw the driver fall asleep. "The driver is a model boy, he has a perfect business resume, alcohol tests and drug tests were negative. We believe that something strange has happened, we expect clarifications from the investigators. They took the phone to check if it was on the phone. The important thing is that he and the passengers are well. Shifts of 6 and a half hours of driving are exhausting. It is scientifically proven that a Rome bus driver working 10 years compared to one of Milan it is as if he had worked 5 years more, considering the conditions. They have increased workloads and see what comes out of it ".
