Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed a government decision to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement. He announced this on Monday in a government meeting.

According to the document "Russia assumes that it is important to maintain and increase the ability to absorb forests and other ecosystems …".

At the same time, it is pointed out that Moscow considers it unacceptable to abuse the Climate Change Agreement as a barrier to a steady socio-economic development of the countries.
The PM also stressed that the Paris Agreement was more flexible than the earlier Kyoto Protocol.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Gordeyev said that a law on state regulation of greenhouse gas emissions should be passed within one year. Its draft has already been drafted by the Ministry of Economic Development.

According to a statement of Russia's World Nature Fund (WWF), this organization welcomed Russia's entry into the Paris Climate Agreement. "The WWF welcomes the fact that Russia will become a full participant in the Paris Agreement. This important gesture indicates that we are holding together with the whole world, the most advanced countries, and are aware of the growing problem of climate change and its anthropogenic nature, "said Alexei Kokorin, Director of the Climate and Energy Program of Russia's World Nature Fund. He pointed out that the agreement would apply from 2020.

The Paris Climate Agreement, the first global agreement on the climate, was signed in December 2015. It includes an action plan to stop global warming.
