Death toll rises to 12


Moroccan authorities said on Monday they had recovered the bodies of five Moroccans after a boat they were traveling in drowned in their adventure of illegal immigration to Spain, bringing the death toll to 12.

A security source said that "sea waves in the Ain Harouda area near the city of Casablanca has killed new bodies of candidates for clandestine immigration, so the civil protection men recovered the rest," he told "Sputnik" that "the search for other potential passengers in the delinquent boat continues."

Last Saturday, authorities found the bodies of seven Moroccan citizens, including a woman, after the rubber boat they were traveling in for illegal immigration, and three other unconscious people were also found and taken to hospital, where they recovered consciousness after receiving the necessary aid.

With its geographical location close to Europe, Morocco is a starting point for illegal immigrants, especially from sub-Saharan Africa.

EU countries are providing material assistance to Morocco to curb the flow of illegal immigrants to the EU from Morocco.

Pressure on Morocco increased after the Libyan coast was closed to migrants under an agreement with Italy to curb the phenomenon.
