A small party congress voted on Saturday in Kleinmachnow after controversial debate with 46 of 54 votes for – that is 85.2 percent. There were seven votes against and one abstention.
Green leader Annalena Baerbock campaigned before the vote for:
"If green people do not participate in these five years, then we will not be able to reduce the tonnes of CO2 a bit," she warned.
Just over three weeks after the state elections, on Thursday evening the leaders of the SPD, CDU and Greens announced that they wanted to start negotiations for a red-black-green coalition. The Boards of the parties of the SPD and CDU have already approved the start of coalition negotiations. The coalition negotiations are due to start on Monday.
After the state elections on September 1, the SPD with 26.2 percent of the vote to the leading party in Brandenburg, the AFD finished second with 23.5 percent. The CDU and the Greens followed with 15.6 and 10.8 percent respectively.
